Embedding Mashups on Blogger & WordPress

Yes, creating mashups, and sharing/embedding them, isn't the easiest thing to do. But we've tried to make this as easy as possible & we're continually working on improving the process- Thanks for your patience!!

You can embed a Ucubd mashup directly to your website/blog as long as your platform supports JavasScript widgets. One notable exception is the free WordPress which is very restrictive when it comes to embedding. However, embedding your mashup in Blogger is pretty straightforward.

Getting Your Embed Code

Once you've gone through the steps of creating a mashup the embed code is on the right side of the template where it says "EMBED":

You should copy this embed code since you'll need to paste it into the HTML of your blog/website. The "URL" link below the embed code is useful for sharing on social networks.

Note: To grab an embed code from a mashup simply click on the "websites" embed option at the bottom of a mashup. The embed code will be copied to your clipboard:

Embedding Ucubd Mashups on Blogger

To embed your mashup on Blogger, paste the mashup embed code into the "Edit HTML" option in the Blogger editor:

Thanks to recent improvements in Blogger Preview mode, your mashup should now show up if you want to preview your blog post:

In this case the mashup has a custom image representing it with the Ucubd play button in the middle. The custom image option is the last option on the scroll down menu of a mashup template.

Embedding Ucubd Mashups on WordPress

The WordPress embedding process is similar to Blogger as long you are using a self-hosted version of WordPress. Here's an example of embedding Ucubd mashups from our good friends at SaveFans! Paste the mashup embed code in the HTML view of your new blog post:

Do not preview your blog post as the WordPress preview option will actually damage & prevent your mashup from generating!

When you hit the "Publish" button the mashup will generate in your new blog post:

Notice that the mashup doesn't include a custom image as previously described in the Blogger example. Instead the mashup takes a default background from the contents (YouTube & Twitter) of the mashup. You should chose the option- our default image or your custom image- that will best encourage user interaction.

Using uCubd to monetize your videos

In some of our recent posts we’ve described the benefits of using multimedia mashups to increase engagement and drive more traffic. While our focus has been on bloggers and other web publishers we may have overlooked a significant group of people that could greatly benefit from using the uCubd platform.

Online video creators, producers, aggregators, video bloggers and others can get a lot of value out of using our mashups.

Lets say you are a blogger who specializes in creating product review videos or you are an aggregator with a website that collects product review videos. In both cases you either embed the videos or link to them on your site and you try to monetize them by using AdSense or an Amazon sidebar or some other affiliate or advertising solution. The problem with AdSense is that it looks like advertising and doesn’t add to the viewing experience. The Amazon sidebar may or may not show related products and is not in the main view. Your embedded videos are surrounded by text and other content which may distract the viewer.

Our mashups can solve both of these problems by providing a better video viewing experience and more engaging advertising. Watching a video inside our mashups is like being in a movie theater, we “turn down the lights” and present the viewer with an uncluttered visual experience. In our mashups we pair the videos with either the Amazon Carousel product widget or the Amazon MP3 list widget. In both cases the user experience is more engaging and compelling than the traditional advertising such as AdSense or the affiliate sidebar. The users can interact with the Amazon Carousel by rotating the products and getting a visual preview. The Amazon MP3 list widget gives them an opportunity to listen to the tracks before buying them.

When you create a mashup you get two things – an embeddable mashup widget and a standalone page of your mashup on uCubd.com. This lets visitors of our site find and share your content and also gives you an opportunity to drive traffic to your content outside of your website or blog while collecting your affiliate revenues.

uCubd standalone mashup page

Creating these mashups is easy and literally takes seconds. You don’t need to search for the Amazon widgets, all you need to have is your Amazon Affiliate ID and the video embed code. We take care of the rest. Once you drop in your video embed code we’ll analyze it and our platform will automatically render the Amazon widget with related products or MP3s next to your video. If you want to adjust the Amazon results you can do so by providing your own search keywords. Once you’ve created the mashup you can embed it on most blogging platforms and on any website.

Why embed a video or link to it when you can embed a uCubd multimedia mashup and give your readers a better viewing experience while making money in the process?
We hope you now have a good answer :)

How Social Media Mashups will Improve Engagement and Monetization

As bloggers we are constantly looking for ways to make our blogs more interesting. It goes without saying that it’s important to write well and to know our audience and focus on topics relevant to it. However, these days it may not be enough to simply write good blog posts and assume that our readers will be sufficiently entertained. So what more can we do? I have found that creating new multimedia experiences for our readers by mashing together various social media content is an effective way to increase audience engagement and drive more traffic.

We’ve all heard the saying “A picture is worth a thousand words” it then would logically follow that a video has to be worth a lot more. Of course I’m not telling you anything new by suggesting that you should use video embeds in your blogs to pique your readers’ interest. We already know that embedding multimedia content such as web video, flash games and other widgets is an effective way to get your audience actively involved.

What I’m proposing is a different approach. Why not get more value out of your embeds by embedding more than one thing at a time? For instance you could enhance that YouTube video you were planning on embedding by combining it with a related Twitter feed. Thus, your YouTube video will come equipped with its own reader “comments”. Your readers will not only get the opportunity to enjoy the video but they’ll be able to see what the Twitter community thinks about it as well. As a result your audience will likely be more engaged by consuming this YouTube & Twitter combination than by the “commentless” YouTube video alone.

You can also consider the multimedia mashup as a blog post contained within itself. It is sometimes a challenge to consistently come up with compelling content for our blogs. Why not use the creative energy of millions of YouTube and Twitter users to help us put together blog posts on current hot topics without investing a ton of time? You can write a short intro and supplement it with the YouTube/Twitter mashup. Your audience can enjoy the video and stay engaged by reading the endless flow of tweets.

What if you don’t have a YouTube video handy? No problem. Just think of a topic and we’ll do the work of finding the relevant YouTube videos and Twitter feed and mashing them together. Can’t think of a current hot topic? Not to worry, just use Twitter’s trending topics that we provide and create a compelling YouTube & Twitter mashup in seconds.

The mashing together of multimedia content will not only increase engagement but can also help you monetize your blog. We can take that same YouTube video and combine it with the Amazon product widget. Your readers can enjoy watching the video and observe related Amazon products right next to it. It is the best of both worlds. The viewing experience is not interrupted by having an advertisement intrude on the video in any way and yet the products remain highly visible. This particular YouTube & Amazon combination should result in a higher conversion rate than having the traditional Amazon sidebar which may or may not show content-related products and is not in the main view.

Some videos may be better suited to be mashed together with MP3s rather than products. Amazon provides an MP3 music list widget that can be combined together with video. Your readers can enjoy watching a YouTube music video and then listen to related Amazon MP3 tracks and purchase them right on the spot.
Another advantage of using the multimedia mashup over traditional affiliate marketing is the potential of making money outside of your blog. The Amazon widget contained within the mashup stores your Amazon affiliate code. As readers embed the mashup on other websites and blogs or link to it, your affiliate code travels along with it. The mashup that started on your blog can now continue to work hard for you on other websites and help you get more value out of your affiliate marketing. In fact, this opens up a new way to take advantage of popular web videos. You now have a great incentive to leverage viral content by attaching your affiliate campaign to it. If your mashup goes viral that means your affiliate campaign just went viral as well.

My company uCubd.com (you cubed) was created to give bloggers and web publishers an opportunity to effectively leverage popular social media content. We have built a mashup platform that will allow you to add more value to your stand-alone embeds. The best thing about our technology is that it’s free and easy. It literally takes seconds to create a mashup using our platform. All one needs to create a mashup is a YouTube embed code. Our system will automatically analyze the video and render related tweets from Twitter or products from Amazon next to it. Our mashups are not limited to YouTube, other embeddable video and widgets will work as well. We're also currently working on building a variety of mashup templates that will offer users more options beyond Twitter and Amazon.
Give this a shot, have fun, make some money and let us know what you think.

We're thrilled that Danny reviewed Ucubd and found our technology interesting & useful! He's definitely on top of his craft & correctly pointed out some things (we're actually working on them!) to improve the platform (new templates & keyword transmission from YouTube).

Here's the mashup that Danny posted in his article, it's a TubeTweets (YouTube+Twitter) mashup that uses video from his TEDx talk:
